Aspect Ratios

Sketch Book Notes
Notes on Aspect Ratios and both letter and pillar boxing

They used these ratios based on the best possible visual look for viewing in cinema’s to create the best look for that style of film.

Cinematic

16:9

4:3

The Incredibles:
Aspect Ratio 2.39:1. Was used to create a dramatic large effect. So for The Incredibles they used a wider screen, to create a larger visual look of the environment, it is a heavily based action film with the actions of the character affecting the environment around them, making the environment a big part of the film. Using a wider screen will create a more epic look to the film. The problems that will likely occur when transferring the film from cinematic screen to home cinema and TV for the 2:39:1 is that the film will be stretched. This is where letter boxing will be needed to show the wide screen environment of the film and keep the film unchanged. Unless it is decide the film will be cropped which will take out large amounts of the environment.

Toy Story 3D:
Aspect Ratio: 1.85: 1. I think the aspect ratio for this animated film was because It is easier to transfer this into 3D also Toy Story 3D uses a taller screen and less width, it is more based around the characters themselves and their actions rather than how their actions affect the environment around them. The problems that will likely occur when transferring the film from cinematic screen to home cinema and TV for the 1:85:1pillarboxing will occur to keep the height and make up for the lack of length within the film. The film will looked stretched if the film is cut to take out the pillar boxing.

Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West’s aspect ratio is 2.35:1. The Chosen aspect ratio for this film causes the same problem as The Incredibles with the film footage being
stretched. This is where letter boxing will also be needed to show the wide screen environment of the film as well as keep the film footage Un alterd.
