COLOUR THEORY : IN MUSIC VIDEOS

The Buggles-Video Killed the Radio

Music video: Cocaine Blues

Colours to enhance the music within a music video would be such as soft Yellow/ Orange lighting to help aid the mood and atmosphere of the song. Sets such as wooden texture would also go with the singer’s western style of singing and smooth metallic black to symbolize jail and guns. The music comes across as quite western styled, so the character would likely have the stereotypical look of a western singer so blue jeans, cowboys hat, Leather jacket with tassels and cowboy boots with the spurs. Materials such as this would be interesting to have in a barn of some sort with hay bales, but with jail bars and barbed wire to tie in with the story the song is telling.

Music video: Stars where I come from

Colours such as these would best match the song with its peaceful yet sad nature. This song is quite harsh at one point. It is peaceful at the start but then gets quit angry and then returns to being peaceful. As stars are referenced throughout the song, I would use Purples, blues and pinks as these reflect the pictures of galaxies that Nasa produces. As he always sings about falling I would use blues as to symbolize the colour of the sky. I think colours which are subtle and not too vibrant will go with the mood of most of the song but maybe the vibrant orange or red could be used for the harsh part of the song. The character sounds like a stereotypical hippy. The material of his outfit would consist of loose, baggy clothing with vibrant tie-dyed clothing, flares and yellow tinted lenses. The character would also have long hair. The lighting would be soft, not warm, but quite cold, maybe blue-tinted as the song is quite sad.
