Quote:
“Colour scripts serve a functional purpose in
animation. Due to the nonlinear production process of computer animation, the
director needs all the clues he can get as to what the finished image might
look like on the screen. The colour script is an early attempt to map out the
colour, lighting, emotion and moods in a film. It’s not about making a single
pretty piece of art; the colour script evolves throughout the early stages of
the film, hand in hand with story development.”
This board
features Shrek. The use of green and blues in this colour board is an example
of analogous colour techniques where the colours are adjacent to each other on
the colour wheel. The mood fluctuates quite a lot between the green and blue
toned environments. The blue is quite moody and obviously night-time, not dark
but twilight while the green is obviously day time turning into the night. The
colour is quite evil looking and this fits well as they are in a graveyard at
one point. Earlier on the green and blue is more blended together but later on
there is more separation between colours. At the beginning things are calm and
peaceful looking whereas later on it starts to become less pretty and more
stylistic with each frame consisting of more tones with the same colour. The
boards starts off warm with the blended greens but then gets gradually colder
with the separation of the colours and less use of green and more use of blue.
The next colour board I will look at
is from Finding Nemo. This board appears to be a mix of both complementary
colours and clashing colours. This also adds to the drama of the scene. There
is also a small amount of green used which is adjacent to blue on the colour
wheel. At the beginning of the board, the clashing colour tones of pink and
blue creates a friction in the scenes that reflects the narrative that is
happening. The use of green as an adjacent colour creates a more relaxed
environment which again reflects what is happening in the film. The use of the
complementary colour technique with use of the occasional orange adds to the
mood and environment of the scene. The
dramatic use of vibrant orange against a pale, mint green creates a sense of
time and mood within the scene. It is either sunrise or sunset in this scene,
this breaks away from use the complementary blues, greens and oranges and
signifies a shift in the storyline of the film from one perspective to another.
